The African Innovation Prize is UK-based registered charity (No. 1146881), founded in 2010 to spur student innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa, through university-based business planning competitions. We have developed a model involving a two-phase business plan competition. During the first stage, following a workshop introducing students to the idea of entrepreneurship and what it entails, students are given the opportunity to submit 250-word business ideas and the three best ones are awarded the equivalent of £200. In the second stage, we hold a week-long Enterprise week in which local business leaders give talks and run activities for students giving them tips to transform their business ideas into a fully-developed 1500-word business plan. The plan voted best by our international panel of judges wins £2000. Once prizes have been awarded, we continue to support winners by providing opportunities to access mentoring by local entrepreneurs.African Innovation Prize has successfully applied this model in Rwanda and Sierra Leone and will soon be launching activities in Burundi. Our mission is to become the first pan-African business plan competition as we support the next generation of African social business leaders.
