The purpose of Bearcast is to provide a training ground for all students interested in the radio industry and to provide unique music and informational programming to the University of Cincinnati community. The obligation of this station and all those involved is to reach out to the multi–cultured environment and offer a medium for expression.The idea to bring a radio station back to the University began approximately ten years ago while plans for the new College–Conservatory of Music (CCM) Village were being developed. Assistant Professor Dr. John Owens was brought in to oversee the development and ongoing operations of the station. In the Autumn Quarter of 1999, he organized a staff to discuss, plan, brainstorm, and research all the components that would go into what would eventually become Bearcast. The generous donation of philanthropists Jack and Joan Strader provided the foundation needed to kick off the new station. On November 26, 2000, Bearcast officially opened to UC and the world.Historically, CCM has had a strong and rich presence in Cincinnati radio. This department was first established in 1936 as the Radio Extension of the College of Music of Cincinnati. With the guidance of Helene V. Wurlitzer, the program evolved in order to provide more knowledge of radio for prospective students. On October 21, 1946 the College was given a BFA degree in Radio Education with the basis of completing a four–year academic curriculum. Thus, it became the first program of its kind in the whole nation! In the early 1970's, the Division of Broadcasting became the new label for the department under a revamped academic standard within CCM. Finally, in 1990 it was renamed the Electronic Media Division due to the rapid progression of multimedia and the Internet.Today, the Electronic Media Division continues to forge into the future with its Internet–only radio station, Bearcast.
