Cville 1st Gen was started by Brian Kayser and his former AVID students in 2018 to address potential needs of first generation college students. Together, they have built a community-based cohort to provide support, encouragement, and connection as students began college. Cville 1st Gen meets during breaks while having check-ins through text and email throughout the school year. During the pandemic, the group kept in-touch through virtual meetings. The group also started a first-gen survival guide book, which is still in progress. During the summer, the organization held a week long retreat for high school juniors and seniors to assist with college application process and any questions they had.
