"We're changing the world one family at a time!" As the world's future leaders, From Houses to Homes UNC-Chapel Hill is a great outlet for TarHeels to develop leadership skills, experience personal growth, earn a more appreciative attitude through service and international cultural exposure. Through partnering with the Guatemalan nonprofit From Houses to Homes (FHTH), students at Carolina will be enabled to draw intercultural connections and grow as individuals. Our end goal is to fund annual trips to Guatemala with the intent of furthering these connections. Tar Heels will have the chance to apply for a trip to Guatemala to build concrete homes in rural communities and take steps in ending the cycle of poverty one family at a time."Guatemala is rich in nature and spirit, but among the poorest in living standards"; as students at Carolina we have the chance to change the quality of life of our international friends. FHTH is unique in that it makes sustainable changes to families' lives rather than providing temporary solutions. For families enrolled in the program, FHTH spends a week tearing down their previous living structure, often a cornstalk shack, and building a sturdy, cinder-block home. Families also gain access to free healthcare at the nonprofit's clinic, the San José Medical Clinic, and education at the organization's school, Escuela Kemna'Oj. Every child has the right to an education, but the nonprofit only exists with the help of donations and caring volunteers. Our members organize regular enrichment activities for the Tar Heel community. These events include, but are not limited to the following:- Engaging in book clubs discussing important texts concerning Latin American culture- Discussing films about Guatemala- Hosting supplemental lectures for students to learn more about Guatemalan culture, background, and language (especially before traveling)- Organizing collaborative partnerships with other student organizations
