Prosecutors know that our criminal justice system is broken. 10.6 million people cycle through America's jails each year, most of whom have not been convicted of a crime. Millions of cases entering the system are for low-level and non-violent offenses. Our courts and jails are filled with people suffering from mental health challenges, addiction, homelessness, and poverty.America's over-reliance on prosecution and incarceration poses staggering economic and social costs with disastrous effects on minority and lower-income communities. Costs associated with criminal prosecution and incarceration are estimated to exceed $181 billion per year. This often comes with little to no improvement to public safety.Prosecutors want to do better, but they need help. Justice Innovation Lab gives them the data-driven tools to design more equitable, effective, and fair criminal justice policy.
