It only takes a spoonful to nourish a loved one's soul.I learned this during my time as a nursing home and hospital nurse when faced with a patient who wouldn't eat. Oftentimes, one of their relatives would bring in a culinary heirloom that has been in their family for generations. One bite and the room would transform from a clinical, drab place that was forcing someone to pause their life to a safe but vibrant cocoon of healing. They were nourished by more than just the food. They were comforted by the memories of a garden that the spice in a hearty chili evoked; the glimpses of their grandmother that they got while taking bites of her famous casserole (lovingly prepared by a family member); and the reassurances that their legacy would continue, evident when their grandaughter fed them fresh Hungarian donuts — the memory of afternoons pulling the sweet morsels from hot oil sharp in both minds. The feeling of being a spectator in these intimate family moments can only be explained by the fact that I've decided to dedicate my life to writing a cookbook inspired by these recipes.
