Nalima is a start-up with the objective of producing silk yarn from silk waste by preserving Bulgarian local traditional crafts and cultural heritage in fabric production. Our social objective is to support the elderly population of Bulgaria, that currently have a lifestyle below the poverty line in Bulgaria. We also want to bring new job opportunities to regions, which have been identified as under serious threat of social exclusion. Our environmental objective is to utilize sericulture waste, which originates in the local Bulgarian Scientific Center on Sericulture – Vratsa. This waste requires a totally different process than traditional reeling of silk, which resembles a lot the processing of wool fibers into yarn. With Bulgaria being among one of the historical powers in silk production combined with local wool production capacity, we are confident we can combine the two and showcase that silk waste can be spun beautifully into a strong fiber, which has market potential.
