The NUS Volunteer Action Committee (NVAC) is a student-driven interest group that serves the community through volunteering, youth empowerment and encouragement of community and student initiatives. Established in 1990 with the initial aim of providing an avenue for undergraduates to volunteer their time to help the less fortunate in society, NVAC has since grown to have more than 350 dedicated and committed volunteers who carry out a range of regular volunteering programmes, special community events as well as overseas humanitarian missions. Project NVAC@NUH is a Volunteering Project where volunteers regularly visit patients in National University Hospital (NUH) to uplift their spirits and befriend them, reducing their feelings of loneliness. There are three different aspects that prospective volunteers can participate in for this project. The Silver Connection, a programme in the Adult's Ward, seeks to help elderly patients engage in cognitive tasks to keep their brain active during their stay in the hospital. In the Psychiatric Ward, volunteers engage with the patients through conversations and games, alleviating their feelings of isolation and providing them direct community support. In the Children's Ward, volunteers interact and mentor child patients, forging close bonds with them. Through this project, volunteers will build upon their empathy and compassion, and gain a broader perspective through their interactions with patients from all walks of life.
