Wine & Spirits - Isle La Motte, Vermont, United States
Here at ZAFA Wines each collection is inspired by the fruit first. ZAFA wines are intentional in every way—no fining, filtering, additives, or funny business. No herbicides or pesticides in the vineyard, just fermented juice from responsibly farmed living fruit. Simply put, wine is farming. What's in a Name?If you ever wondered why we named the company ZAFA...you should know it's a literary reference to the book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. Fukú and Zafa are key words in the novel. The very interesting yet confusing birth of fukú is one that dates back more than 400 years ago to the discovery of the Americas and the beginning of the slave trade. Fukú derives from a long line of traditions, especially, "the perfect blend of bad luck mixed with mayhem that one could fall into or get thrown at by the biggest sorcerer: life." Along with fukú, the words zafa is also very present in the text. In contrast, it is used to, "counter fukú." Zafa is a counterspell.Everything that ZAFA Wines LLC is and everything we are pursuing as farmers, winemakers, and a as business. The company was founded and is owned by a black woman - a counterspell to colonization in America. It is a ZAFA.
