U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Officers assist the district court to serve the local community, and defendants and offenders who come before the courts. Officers play a key role in the federal criminal justice process by investigating and supervising persons charged with or convicted of federal crimes. They prepare reports that federal judges use to make release and sentencing decisions; and direct persons under supervision to services to help them follow the law, including substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, medical care, and training. Probation and Pretrial Services Offices are located in 93 of the 94 U.S. district courts, and include the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.
