Mentors for Youth of Dubois County is dedicated to facilitating mutually beneficial relationships between youth and volunteers for the purpose of enhancing individual lives and the community. We were founded in 1987 as Big Brothers, Big Sisters and have been serving children ages 6-18 in our community ever since. We currently have 90 children enrolled in our program. More than just offering mentorship, the Mentors for Youth program is a comprehensive program that benefits the children enrolled as well as the mentors involved and the community as a whole.Benefits to the children are not limited to better school performance, better relationships with family and peers, increased self esteem, learning how to make better choices, learning the value of education and work ethic, and learning better life skills. Benefits to the mentors are having the opportunity to give back to the community by impacting the life of a child, share their life experiences through mentoring, feel needed, do something positive with free time, share good morals with a child, and teach their own children to appreciate what they have and learn to give back. These children are then less likely to commit crimes, drop out of school, or become reliant on social programs. They have a positive effect on society, have a better chance of furthering their education, and learn to give back to their own community!
