The place has been mentioned in several ancient texts such as ‘Manas Khand of Skandapurana. As per mythological belief Naini Lake was formed from Ma Satis charred eye that was fallen here. In 1815 after the Anglo-Nepalese war in Kumaon Kumaon & Garhwal regions were occupied by the British. In 1839 Nainital was rediscovered by the British. A British businessman Mr. P Barron (a sugar trader) and his friend got lost into the hills while hunting Barron became so impressed by the beauty of this place that he left the sugar business and built a European Colony on shores of the Naini Lake. Officially the discovery of Nainital appeared in an issue of the Englishman Calcutta in 1841 gradually a formal Municipal Corporation was formed in 1850 and Nainital officially became the ‘Summer Seat of the North-Western states in 1862. It is said that the town was destroyed during the Landslip of 1880 it was rebuilt by the British later therefore the English charm can be noticed all around in the form of buildings roads cultural lodges etc. After that the town developed & progressed at rapid speed
