Mood Active is a Sydney-based charity association that provides small group motivation and educational exercise programs as a treatment for people experiencing mild to moderate depression and anxiety and other mood disorders to help them get back on their feet. This includes, but is not limited to individuals with unipolar, bipolar, dysthymic, melancholic and post-natal depressions, PTSD and panic disorders. We also help individuals not yet diagnosed who need help to boost their mental health. A formal referral is not required at this time.We have been operating since 2013 in Sydney and our vision is to get more Australian's using exercise to improve their mental health. We currently provide face to face (suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions) and virtual 4 & 8 week exercise programs. Alternatively clients can start with a lower commitment casual membership. Our 4 week program combines psychoeducation and exercise where individuals learn resilience skills to start and sustain exercise. All programs have additional coaching support given that clients tend to struggle with motivation. Our programs are evidence-based and also aim to address the growing need in the community to improve the uptake of exercise as a treatment for mental ill health, given it is still under-prescribed and underfunded in Australia. We are a small team of 48 and 80% of our efforts come from our volunteers due to an ongoing lack of funding. We aim to keep the programs low cost and free and look to do this through our charitable partners, volunteers, donations, grants and fundraising.
