Scarbolo is a sustainable estate and boutique winery in Friuli, established in 1982.Today helmed by the family's third generation, the House champions the excellence of Pinot Grigio's uncelebrated heritage and of Grave, its little-known appellation, as well as of co-fermented, appassimento, and other wines embodying the region's spirit.In the '50s, then a tenant farmer, Gino Scarbolo set the Wheels in motion once reformed laws allowed him to finally purchase his own land. His son Valter followed suit in the '80s, narrowing the farm's scope to focus on wine and soon realizing his vision of a vertically integrated winery, from vine to bottle – moving on from the sale of bulk wine.Located in the village of Lauzacco, a stone's throw from the Western bank of the river Torre and the Slovenian border, low-yielding and densely planted vines dig their roots in stratified soils, composed of medium-textured clay, sand, limestone, and gravels in alternating layers. These grounds were generated by ancient erosion processes and melting glaciers dating back to 15,000 years ago and combine with the unique symphony of eastern winds from Slovenia, the balancing effect of the Sea breezes, and the Alps fending off the northern harsh climates.Despite its potential, Grave long remained subject of short-sighted industrial scale winemakers and the reputation they drew upon the area. From day one, Valter challenged this reductive and superficial perception, becoming one of the first and most fierce heralds of the appellation's character and potential. Driven by that same rebellious spirit, he chose to herald Pinot Grigio, a grape uniquely gifted by our terroir and yet the region's underdog variety par-excellence.Today, Lara and Mattia Scarbolo are carrying forward the founding dynamism and work to epitomize the message of the logo's growing Wheels, while consolidating their own integrity, and offering ever-improving, gracefully powerful and balanced wines.
