Green Horizons offers educational outdoor activities for youth in Israel. The organization focuses on hiking to foster the development of interpersonal and leadership skills, social responsibility, whilst also promoting Zionist values and connection to the Land of Israel. Green Horizons' activities cater to children between the 5th and 12th grades. The program includes weekly activities, overnight hikes once a month, and longer treks and camps during the school vacations. With the help of the counselors, the students learn about Israel's history, geography and environment and also develop survival skills. Through the adventures and experiences during the hikes, the teenagers acquire self-confidence, independence, curiosity and a better understanding of their surroundings. In addition to the regular activities, Green Horizons runs a number of nation-wide projects serving social and ecological goals. Amongst them are the Water Harvesting Project, the Young Leadership Project, the Project with Autistic Youth, the Periphery Project and the Forest renewal project in the Carmel mountains. [add internal links] Green Horizons reaches out to youth spanning all social sectors and communities in Israel. In the economically weaker periphery, Green Horizons offers its activities free of charge so children from low-income households can benefit from the program as well. Green Horizons was founded in 1974 to commemorate Uri Maimon, a passionate hiker and charismatic leader of youth projects who fell in the Yom Kippur War. The organization, which is chaired by Major General Uzi Dayan, is primarily funded by the Jewish National Foundation, US and Keren Kayemet Leisrael, with additional funding from the participants, the Israeli Ministry of Education and other donors.
