MY ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY An entrepreneur identifies a need and meets it. In 2004, while i was still at the University of Lagos, lecturers went on "strike" so I was at home. I noticed every morning, people walk by with large basins on their heads, covered with sack-cloth. One day, I asked one of them what was in the basin. "Ice-block", she replied briskly and hurried along. I later found out that they trekked quite a distance everyday to get the "ice-block" to chill their soft-drinks for sale in the hot, humid afternoons that the city of Lagos is known for. I lived at the time with my auntie in a serviced apartment and this meant uninterrupted power supply. I got a loan from her to buy a freezer. In 2 months, I paid off my debt, the business flourished as I had both location and price advantage (i sold wayyyy cheaper than the other establishments, as i did not have to pay rent or electricity bills). The business continued throughout the 7-month strike, till i had to return to school. I identified a NEED and met it. I was 21. My name is Tosin Oketunji and i am the founder of OKETT STUDIO- an Apparel Design and Manufacturing Company in Lagos, Nigeria.I have a degree in Estate Management. I, however, followed my passion and am now a Fashion Designer. I wanted to study at the London College of Fashion but upon enquiry found the fees/living expenses above my budget. I did the next best thing. Research led to me to an alumnus of the London College of Fashion, who just set up a college here in Lagos. I completed a course in Fashion Design & Garment Technology under her tutelage and that of a few other professionals. Registered as a Corporate Entity in October 2015, our competencies include: :: Fashion Label Development :: Fashion Business Advisory :: Apparel Manufacturing :: Fashion Courses
