The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) is the democratic voicefor the nearly 10,000 students studying at Lakehead University. Ourmembership includes undergraduate and graduate students acrossLakehead's two campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia.LUSU's mandate is to ensure that all students can pursue academicexcellence as well as personal and social growth at Lakehead, free frombarriers related to income, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,family status, or ability. Through LUSU, students access a wide variety ofservices, supports, job and volunteer opportunities, and social activitiesthrough clubs and events.The student union owns and operates two major businesses, as well asseveral services key to students' experience at Lakehead. Thebusinesses include The Outpost, one of the largest campus pubs inCanada, and The Study Coffeehouse. LUSU's core services include thestudent Health & Dental Plan, providing affordable comprehensivecoverage of extended health and pharmaceuticals to thousands ofLakehead students, the U-Pass, providing unlimited public transit tostudents at one tenth the normal cost, and the student handbook.LUSU is run for students, by students. Our democratic structure ensuresthat every Lakehead student has a voice in how their student unionrepresents them. Through LUSU's annual elections, students choosetheir student leaders and decide on specific issues through referendum.Students are also involved every day in LUSU's decision-making bysitting on committees, answering surveys, attending meetings, andserving as student representatives.
