The Summerhouse mission is to provide customized programs for youth and young adults with intellectual disabilities where individuals feel valued, respected and are contributing members of society. On June 4, 2012, The Summerhouse first opened its doors as a full time daily educational program encompassing basic life skills, social and emotional skills, functional academics and vocational training focused on entry into community-based employment. The organization is named after one of our first members, Summer, whose parents sought a place for their daughter to blossom into an adult actively engaged in the community. The Summerhouse distinctively focuses on 18-29-year-old individuals with intellectual disabilities during the vulnerable transition from a structured high school environment into adulthood where they must take a bigger part in organizing their lives. Ultimately, our goal is for each person we serve to engage in meaningful work and to live as independently as their own, unique capabilities will allow. All of our programs teach some if not all, of the skills they will need to advance along this developmental continuum. We are community of doers, thinkers and learners who believe in challenging the status quo by investing in the young folks and empowering them to live their own lives as independent as possible. We believe in thinking differently.
