Founded in 2003 by Vernecia Washington of Cincinnati, OH. Vision Works, Inc. is a social justice and policy advocacy organization. Vernecia was a legally blind hair stylist/ successful business owner, who believed that true vision involved the ability to see opportunity beyond the limitations one could see with the eyes. She believed in the beauty within all children, and implemented programs to empower youths to succeed, through giving them a sense of presence and self. Vernecia trained them to be leaders in their community by developing skills that they would need to survive and thrive in the world. She encouraged them to pursue their dreams with passion and with power. Vernecia understood that transformation took place on the inside, but she inspired them to see the beauty in self by first adorning them on the outside. She understood that if they could see and understand the barriers to achievement that they could overcome them.Our mission is to promote leadership and foster change that transforms communities and the national cultural landscape. Our goal is to eliminate social and economic disparity by empowering stakeholder groups to understand systems that impact mobility and to create initiatives that will eliminate the obstacles that inhibit success for all children and families. We believe that the problem of poverty is complex and systemic, so we concentrate our efforts around dismantling systems of oppression while simultaneously developing assets across the entire family.Our mission is to alleviate the impact of racism and help people move out of poverty. We believe that in order to implement radical change and more equitable outcomes in communities, impacted individuals must lead the charge for change, by first embracing a vision for change that connects the dots in ways that enables them to see a pathway to opportunity for moving beyond their current circumstance to achieving their desired results.
