Cisplatin and other platinum compounds are essential chemotherapeutic components for many pediatric malignancies. Unfortunately, platinum-based therapies can cause ototoxicity in many patients, leaving many survivors of childhood cancer with permanent and irreversible hearing loss. Permanent hearing loss, even minimal, acquired at a young age has a devastating impact on development, education, and socialization and a lifelong negative impact on Quality of Life. There are no currently approved treatments for the prevention of platinum-induced hearing loss. At Fennec Pharmaceuticals, we are dedicated to the development of our investigational agent, PEDMARK™, for the prevention of ototoxicity in children, and we hope that this will enable more children to retain their hearing.
