The mission of the 100 Campaign is to ensure that 100% of people living with Type 1 diabetes have access to insulin by 2022, the 100th anniversary of the first person with diabetes receiving insulin. Type 1 diabetes (DM1) is an autoimmune condition that halts production of insulin and cannot be prevented. Without daily insulin shots a person with DM1 will not survive. Although available for 92 years and recognized as an essential medicine by the World Health Organization, millions with diabetes still do not have access to insulin. Life expectancy for some diagnosed with DM1 in parts of Africa is limited to months while those in other parts of the world can live normal life-expectancies.
