The 1ST Brigade Special Troops Battalion was activated under the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 2d Infantry Division on 20 June 2005. The unit traces its lineage and honors to the 2nd Engineer Battalion, which was first activated on 3 August 1861 for service during the American Civil War. It inherits a history that includes participation in the American Civil War, Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. Its campaigns include the Peninsula Campaign, the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, the defense and subsequent breakout of the Pusan Perimeter, and the advance to the Yalu River. During its illustrious history, the Battalion has earned thirty four campaign, six campaign streamers during World War II alone, as well as the Belgium Fourragere and two Korean Presidential Unit Citations. The inactivation of 2nd Engineer Battalion and activation of 1ST Brigade Special Troops Battalion was significant in the fact it exemplified the transformation of the U.S. Army into a modular force. The Battalion consists of the Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company, a Military Intelligence Company, a Signal Company, and a Combat Engineer Company. Known as the Spartan Battalion, we prepare for war to serve as a credible deterrent to north Korean aggression and are prepared to provide critical enabling capabilities to Strike Force Iron's offensive operations.
