The 2LT Richard W Collins III Foundation's mission is to invest in the education and empowerment of promising young Americans who've proven themselves to be outstanding citizens and are committed to working toward a hate-free, more just society for all. In the early hours of May 20, 2017, Richard W. Collins III was murdered in an act of hate. Two days earlier he had been commissioned into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, a tremendous milestone realizing his childhood dream of serving his country in uniform. He was also mere days away from graduation from Bowie State University (BSU). Just as his promise was being realized, it was stolen. In the wake of tragedy, the 2LT Richard W. Collins III Foundation was born. We envision a hate-free and more just society for all, and we're committed to investing in promising young Americans in LT Collins' image to help lead us there. Guided by this commitment, our work is currently focused on the communities most deeply affected by Lt. Collins' murder: BSU, LT Collins' alma mater and an historically Black college (HBCU), and University of Maryland College Park, where he was murdered. But our vision is to expand our mentorship program in support of 2LT Richard W. Collins III Scholars nationwide, in addition to building more strategic partnerships between HBCUs and Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) with the intent of bridging the cultural divides that exist between the institutions and their student bodies.
