For the last several hundred years of industrialization, people have attempted to elongate the supply chain and specialize whenever possible. Given cheap enough sources of general labor and expensive but highly productive specialized machinery, a certain level of prosperity has been established on a local and global level. Many companies have arrived at a supply chain that has been stretched to the limits of mechanical and human capacity; they contaminate, they make unsecure, they dilute, and where they make hardship, they call it prosperity.To forge real future prosperity, we should consider building supply chains that are closer to the people they are supplying, less prone to shock or failure in the event of political instability, and offer new potentialities for value so we are no longer dependent on chasing ever cheaper sources of labor. There are significant engineering, educational, economic, and social challenges that must be overcome before we can reach that point where superior value is achieved through alternative and more localized supply chains, but our company's effort will always be aimed towards a future where the things you use are made by people you know.
