4 Seasons Fresh is a highly sustainable agricultural greenhouse-based enterprise developed with the concept of an engineered ecosystem. We use an orchestra of biodiversity within our systems to guide nature to produce its greatest potential year round. In doing so, we are able to facilitate restaurants, markets, grocers, and individual consumers with the highest quality food available. By design our model is both expandable and can be reproduced virtually anywhere. Both our vegetative produce as well as our fish are produced in what is called an 'Aquaponics' system. Aquaponics can be defined as a merger of both hydroponic (the growing of plants in nutrient-rich water instead of soil) and aquaculture (culturing aquatic animals such as fish, prawns/shrimp, bivalves, etc. in tanks) technologies that mimic the natural ecosystems of waterways. Plants and fish both grow sustainably in a recirculating water system; waste from the fish is broken down by naturally occurring aerobic bacteria in the water into fertilizer for the plants. The plants absorb the nutrients from the water, effectively filtering the water for the fish. Because the water is recirculated and constantly being filtered as well as replenished with nutrients, it uses incredibly less water than either aquaculture or hydroponics. Our methods for mushroom production are not entirely unlike our approach to aquaponics; we have developed a very efficient system that is heavily based upon both automation and improved techniques. As a crucial part of this 'synthetic ecosystem,' we will be utilizing two different forms of composting to be able to utilize various local waste.
