79a is a new cross-disciplinary label focused on the production of highly- personal objects and experiences, designed by artists working at the intersection of music composition, performance, cinema, & code. Our mission is to design, preserve, and support new forms of physical artifacts which connect people in a modern digital economy. Founded by a group of artists dedicated to continuing the tradition of experiencing music for the first time as physical artifact, 79a is driven by a shared vision that an album of music can be much more than a stream, download, or promotional gimmick. We believe that a valuable connection between a musician's work and the way an audience perceives its' long-term worth is missing in today's way an audience perceives its' long-term worth is missing in today's mode of "consuming" music. Historically, distribution media physically immortalized an artist's work. In the technological evolution of music discovery and archival, we've not only stripped away music's monetary discovery and archival, we've not only stripped away music's monetary value - but also the sensory connection people have with experiencing value - but also the sensory connection people have with experiencing an album for the first time. Streaming music services are excellent for discovery, consumption, & convenience. But they don't replace the aesthetic experience or social ritual of interacting with a physical album and the apparatus that plays it. 79A formed after a series of collaborations between Deru (Ben Wynn) and EFFIXX (Anthony Ciannamea). While considering novel ways to release his latest Deru album, the two artists focused on designing an object that could physically dimensionalize the ideas present in "1979" - a richly- textured, mesmerizing foray into ambient tape loops. Its' warm, nostalgic grain inspired The Obverse Box - the first audiovisual album released on a portable, handheld LED projector.
