83rd Civil Affairs Battalion Details

The 83rd Civil Affairs Battalion derives its lineage from the 41st Civil Affairs Company, originally constituted on 25 August 1945 as the 41st Military Government, HHC at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Following service in the Korean War and in the occupation thereafter, the 41st inactivated on 31 May 1947 in Kusan, Korea. The company was re-activated as the 41st Military Government Company on 18 March 1955 at Camp Gordon, Georgia and was later given its final designation on 25 June 1959 as the 41st Civil Affairs Company. In November 1965, as U.S. forces began large scale operations in Vietnam, the company reorganized and deployed to Vietnam where it was assigned to Headquarters, First Field Force - Vietnam (I-FFV) and headquartered at Nah Trang. The I-FFV was the U.S. Army corps-level headquarters that controlled the operations of U.S. Army divisions and separate brigades in the II Corps Tactical Zone of the Republic of Vietnam and the 41st became the primary unit providing it civil affairs support. At its greatest deployed strength, the 41st Civil Affairs Company consisted of twenty teams that were assigned to all major tactical units deployed throughout the II Corps Tactical Zone. In late 1968, after participation in all the major campaigns to date, the 41st was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation for its service to the pacification efforts across the First Field Force area of responsibility. In the wake of the drawdown in U.S. forces in Vietnam, the 41st Civil Affairs Company was deactivated for the last time on 28 February 1970 having served five continuous years in Vietnam. The 83rd Civil Affairs Battalion was activated on 16 Sept. 2012 as the United States Army's active duty, Central Command aligned conventional forces civil affairs battalion. The 83rd will proudly carry forth the lineage of the 41st Civil Affairs Company as it forges its own history in service of the United States of America.
