The word doula is derived from the Greek "doula" and refers to "a woman of service." It also means "a slave or servant to a woman." I like this title because I believe that the best way to a happy life is to be of service to others! For more on the word and profession, see DONA. The Doula's job was traditionally performed by aunts, mothers, or other experienced females who attended to the comfort needs, both emotional and physical, of mothers-to-be throughout their pregnancy and labor processes. Unfortunately, today, most of us simply live too far from our families to expect such extended help. To make matters worse, women's attendance at childbirths all but disappeared during the last century with the rise of hospitalized obstetrics. I am thrilled to be working in this field in the 21st century, a time when many women feel they have no support network to turn to during their nine months of pregnancy. By offering other women their experience and expertise for a fee, Doulas honor women's independence and enable us all, as women, to take back our births. Thank you for visiting my site. I look forward to hearing from you! Dena FerreiraCertified Birth Doula CD (DONA)
