A Rocha was founded in 1983, and work was initially based in the Portuguese Algarve, where the first field study centre opened in 1986. International interest gradually increased and in 2000, after A Rocha began work in Lebanon, France, Kenya and Canada, A Rocha International was formed. By 2004 there were National Organisations in 15 countries.A Rocha International (ARI) is a registered charity (England and Wales). ARI is the body that supports A Rocha National Organisations and Associated Projects around the world, publicising the work at an international level and fostering the emergence of new initiatives.Each A Rocha National Organisation is a separate, independent, legal entity.A Rocha South Africa is part of the global family of organizations in A Rocha. Since 2002 A Rocha South Africa has been coordinating community conservation projects and environmental education in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. With the Gauteng province joining in 2018.We are a interdenominational Christian organisation which, inspired by God's love, engages in scientific research, community-based conservation projects, environmental education and theological training.A Rocha responds to the global crisis of biodiversity loss through community-based conservation projects. Via residential field study centres, site-based projects and wider advocacy, A Rocha: Carries out ecological monitoring and research in areas of high value for wildlife Spearheads practical measures for conserving and restoring habitats and their fauna and flora Encourages appreciation of nature and participation in its conservation, through environmental education and community outreach Provides a forum for understanding the relevance of the Christian faith to environmental issues.Climate Stewards is part of the A Rocha network, encouraging us all to reduce our carbon footprint as much as we can and offset the rest.
