Accelerating Circularity is a collaborative effort to accelerate the textile industry's move from linear to circular. The textile industry must move from a take, make waste system to circularity, avoiding the massive amounts of textile waste annually put into landfill. The Environmental Protection Agency's figure show that 15 million tons of textile waste is collected annually in the United States alone. The project focuses on researching, mapping and identifying links required for circular supply chains. These supply chains will be driven by the mechanical and chemical recycling of cellulosic and polyester textile waste. These 3 fibers cover over 80% of all textile fiber production. The project's goal is to establish systems that will use the embedded value and resources in existing textiles for new products, reducing the 15 million of tons of textile waste annually going into landfills and thereby supporting the reduction of the industry's Green House Gas emissions.
