WHAT WE DOThe Achievers Club WA is a charity that helps to give students from low socio-economic backgrounds in Western Australia the opportunity to reach their potential by:- providing educational support in the form of weekly out-of-school mentoring and tuition for selected children (currently from primarily refugee families) who are experiencing learning and/or adjustment difficulties;- working with teachers and parents to maximise the support given to these students;- offering other activities, from time to time, to enhance the students' educational and personal growth;- building self-confidence, trust and a sense of achievement in the students' personal and educational lives; and- where appropriate, supporting students who wish to pursue scholarships for future studies.OUR STORYThis initiative started in 2011 as an informal 'homework club' when retired community member, Danny McEvoy, had a wish to support young people who, through no fault of their own, did not enjoy the opportunities and advantages of other young people. Over a seven-year period, it has been developed and refined by a dedicated team into a community service program that currently helps around 20 children and has approximately 25 mentors in rotation. We have also reduced our waiting list down from 18 children to 5! Now, and with thanks to the significant support of the City of Wanneroo, together with our main sponsors Ertech and Alkira Care and Respite Services, we have been able to formally incorporate as a charity and offer our mentoring to more children in need of our assistance.
