Advanced Optronics (AO), a team of engineers from Carnegie Mellon University, is developing flexible, biocompatible sensor systems to enable smarter, less invasive surgery for a variety of medical applications. Our first product provides real-time feedback to reduce surgical trauma during cochlear implant surgery.AO's technology uses flexible micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensors integrated with the cochlear implant electrode to provide novel, real-time quantitative feedback to surgeons to improve patient outcomes and preserve residual hearing.AO will grow the cochlear implant market, resulting in better hearing for more people. We envision follow-on markets for the technology, including post-operative monitoring of orthopedic implants.
