AFEL is a non-political and non-confessional Lebanese NGO which provides education and care for underprivileged children through a holistic approach which incorporates the family in the child's rehabilitation process.Afel's mission is to assist children in need facing abuse, learning and communication difficulties by tending to their educational development and vocational training as well as equipping them with the tools to protect themselves, become independent and build resilience, thereby facilitating their insertion into society.During the 2017-2018 school year, thanks to donations from its friends and partners, Afel was able to care for more than 500 children and accomplish several projects aimed at improving children's situation in Lebanon:1. Education & BoardingAfel has reached out to 502 children in the following centers:A. Jouar Boarding House:40 children were welcomed in Jouar: these children are mistreated and abused by their families and staying at home represents a threat to their development, if not their life. At Jouar, they benefit from full psychological and educational support.B. A specialized Remedial school at Jouar el Bouachek: 15 of those children attended the centre.C. A specialized remedial school at Burj Hammoud welcomed 74 children.D. Sin el Fil after-school support: 80 children benefitted from after-school support and a daily meal.a. Scholarship support: 163 children received financial aid and psychological and social support at home.b. Social counselling: 145 children were assisted and followed upon by a social worker and psychologist throughout the year.Afel is:A national reference in Child Protection (CP)An expert in Case ManagementA member of World Family Organisation (WFO) and International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN)Afel has been awarded the 2018 Conflict Prevention and Peace Prize in Lebanon by the Ghazal Foundation for Education, Research and Peace in Lebanon.
