There are 7.3 billion of us. In just 12 years there will be one billion more. Current projections show our family growing to almost 10 billion by 2050. These figures are based on fertility rates and life expectancy. What these numbers do not show is that, as of today, we are not prepared to support that many people. If we are honest with ourselves, we are not supporting everyone now and we are depleting the resources we need to survive. A commonly quoted statistic states we will have to increase our current food production by 50% if we want to feed 9 billion. This figure is daunting enough; when you add to that our declining arable land, dwindling biodiversity in our seas, and unpredictability due to climate change and the issue becomes one of our most immediate and pressing issues. Over 1 billion of us live in an area where water is scarce and almost 2 billion more live with intermittent water shortages. The global consumption rate of water of water has been growing at twice our growth rate for the last century. We are already at a tipping point as there is only enough freshwater on earth to support our population now. Without innovative initiatives, we will soon see mass migration and disputes erupting as our neighbors both near and far struggle just to survive. Every year, almost 7 million people die because of poor air quality. 9 of our every 10 of us live in an area where the air we breathe is below minimum quality standards. As we grow and push for a better quality of life, our demand for power has become insatiable. While major initiatives are underway, we are emitting CO2 and other greenhouse gases at rates far higher than we claim to reclaim them through offset programs. We can do better. We must do better. We have to work together, and at speeds greater than the issues manifest, to ensure we are ready. AFEW Ideas is a decentralized organization which provides a LEAN / Agile framework for communities to form nodes to create solutions to air, food, energy, and water scarcity issues. Everyone is welcome and we encourage the most diverse mix of talents possible as it will take our entire global village working together to fight for our home. Anyone can pitch an idea as long as it meets one or more of the AFEW focus areas. Members self-form teams as they gravitate to the project they are most interested in working on. Committing only a few hours a week, members turtle-sprint to manifest a solution. We stand-up and give updates on our progress, gaining valuable insight from other teams. The most promising projects are presented to individuals and organizations looking to invest in a sustainable future. Together, let us strive to protect our one greatest source of collective wellbeing – our home.
