Since the 1990s, ACSA has acted as a home and family for many students, within the African and Caribbean diaspora that is struggling with their transition to a new city and environment. Our aim is to create a space in which students feel comfortable, welcomed and celebrated for their identities and heritage. We take pride in the strength of our community and its historical existence and contribution to the city of Kingston, as well as to Queen's University. Every year we host a variety of events from our highly anticipated Culture Show that brings together numerous cultural student groups across campus, to our monthly Soul Food Sundays. We have also been highly applauded for our phenomenal dance team as well as our annual Black History Month Opening Ceremony- which is of its only kind in Kingston. Moving away from our families and home, to a city where many of us have faced institutional barriers as well social discrimination based on our race and ethnicity, ACSA has become a space of hope and resistance. Despite the hurdles faced, we continue to thrive and exist as a community, ensuring that we make ourselves present on campus and available to all incoming and current students. From undergraduates to PhD students to professors, the ACSA community is one that is continuously expanding and growing.
