Farming - Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
The African Centre for Crop Improvement (ACCI) was started in 2002 with the ambitious goal of becoming a world-class training centre for African plant breeders. Based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, its 124 PhD graduates are part of a new generation of African scientists who are highly trained global experts on the continent's food security crops. Collectively they have released over 150 new crop varieties, many of which have been bred to be ‘climate-smart' and are drought tolerant and resistant to pests and diseases that plague these crops. The ACCI was originally funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and later the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). It now relies on funding from various sources.
