Farming - Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Agri Eastern Cape was established in 2001 and is the voice of the farmer in the province.Formerly known as the Eastern Province Agricultural Union, Agri EC today represents more than 3 000 members and affiliated organisations. Its vision is to develop and grow the agricultural industry as a sustainable economic sector by promoting agricultural business interests, influencing government policy formulation and providing value-added services to its members. The organisation supports agri-tourism as a means of contributing to the sustainability of emerging and commercial farms. By offering value-added tourism and hospitality services such as accommodation, farm stalls, 4×4 routes, mountain biking, hiking and hunting, farmers are able to establish a meaningful connection with the public.Agri EC aims to create further understanding between producers and consumers of agricultural products through vehicles such as the Like Local campaign. It also strives to foster cooperation with other sectors, while taking into consideration the needs and interests of the nation as a whole.Where necessary, the organisation coordinates the views of the province's agricultural stakeholders, so that it presents a united front and speaks with one voice in working with provincial and national government, as well as its parent body, Agri South Africa. From an environmental perspective, it encourages the conservation of soil and water resources in the province, the maintenance of soil fertility and the adoption of improved production methods.Agri EC operates according to its own constitution and adheres to all relevant government legislation. It aims to consider matters on merit alone and without party-political bias or discrimination.
