Research activities in district Swat were initiated during mid sixties by researchers from Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab. Research sub-Station was created in 1975 and upgraded to Research Station in 1980 and then to Research Institute in 2007.\Today it is a multidisciplinary institute, consisting of 8 sections/ Units, i.e., 1) Horticultural Section, 2) Vegetable Botany Section, 3) Economic Botany Section (Oilseeds & Pulses), 4) Cereal Section, 5) Soil Fertility Section, 7) Entomology, 8) Plant Pathology, and 8) Post Production Technology Unit, with a total area of 35 acres. In addition, it has a Summer Station in Kalam on an area of 5 acres.\\Inspired by the diverse climatic conditions of Malakand Division, Agricultural Research Institute (North) Mingora, is purposely a multidisciplinary Institute. Owing to the diversity of climate, each district (Swat, Malakand, Dir, Buner, Shangla, and Chitral) has been classified into separate agro-ecological zones. New entries are added to the list of crops researched at the Institute. Here at the Agriculture Research Institute, Mingora, priorities are established to ensure the best allocation of resources into research and development. The director of the Institute supervise the planning and priority setting process of various sections and as a result well thought out and purposeful project proposals are selected from a prioritized list.
