Civic & Social Organization - Corpus Christi, Texas, United States
Established in 2005 as a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Corporation, Accessible Housing Resources, Inc. began implementing its purpose to provide accessible and safe housing affordable for very low income individuals, with a focus on serving those with disabilities and providing relief for housing cost-burdened families in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend. With its establishment nearly two decades ago, AHRI has developed a small HUD 811 apartment complex, two transitional efficiency units and a shared-housing residence for men with disabilities. Two fo those properties are managed by AHRI and provide affordable and accessible housing options for individuals with disabilities, the majority of whom are SSI recipients. Since 2018, AHRI has assisted low income households in the region who were displaced by Hurricane Harvey to access rental housing with HUD HOME Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) vouchers. Thanks to HEART grant funding in place since 2018, AHRI is providing case management for these households, contracting with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs as a TBRA Administrator as well as becoming established as a TBRA Contractor with the City of Corpus Christi. HEART grant administrator Enterprise Communities has provided AHRI with technical assistance to build its organizational capacity to respond to housing needs of low income individuals and families, particularly post-disaster in the Coastal Bend region.
