The Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre) is a network for international cooperation along and across the Atlantic, with an integrative approach to the advance and sharing of knowledge of space, atmosphere, oceans, climate change, energy and data science, as well as their interactions. Its central theme is North-South and South-North, East-West and West-East cooperation. The AIR Centre results from a two-year long process of scientific diplomacy, called Atlantic Interactions, that was initiated in June 10, 2016, and continued with over 30 other thematic scientific and policy workshops around the world (http://www.atlanticinteractions.org/events/). Four countries are leading the implementation of the AIR Centre through their participation in the ExecutiveCommittee: Portugal, Spain, Brazil and South Africa. Five other countries are associated with the AIR Centre (Nigeria, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde and Uruguay) and three others are acting as observers (UK, Argentina and India). The AIR Centre stimulates governments, academia, industry and citizens to advance science and technology for the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems and for the socioeconomic benefit of all people living along and across the Atlantic Ocean. An inclusive and integrative approach to knowledge on space, atmosphere, ocean, climate and energy in the Atlantic is pursued, supported by emerging methods of data science, always in close alignment with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
