HISTORY OF ORIGIN:- Initially intention of Smt Islam was to support her family by earning extra income and empower local women by training them garment manufacturing process under the banner JYOTI MOHILA UDYOG (JMU). Students from far off began to increase gradually requiring start of new centres in various villages..After few years JMU understood that mere training will not empower the poor students until and unless they get supply order from big garment manufacturers. Hence JMU approached various companies and procured order for their students and they started earning. Over the years, Nurani Islam realized that hard earned money of her students were not at all safe in their homes because big percentage of her students belongs to male dominated community where husbands are accustomed to spend their spouses' money on account of many malevolent things such as gambling, drinking etc against their spouses' will. Incidentally Nurani Islam was selected for an award titled BRAVE WOMAN IN West Bengal and was invited to receive the award in a function organized by NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF WOMEN (NAOW). In that function Nurani Islam was attracted to banners and posters of various participating Self Help Groups in front of the dais. Others were discussing amongst them about their savings and how they were utilizing those for their upliftment. On query they enlighten her about the concept of SHG. Returning from that function she conveyed the idea to some of her neighbors and students and they soon agreed and took necessary step to form SHG for ameliorating their wretched lot and thus AJMU was born.In this way, AJMU has adopted a pragmatic approach to tackle problems related to poverty and social issues at large in rural areas.
