Textiles - Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
It all starts from humble beginnings. In 1955 the fabric retail store was opened on Market Street, today known as Albertina Sisulu Drive, in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). We catered for all the fabric requirements of the domestic market. In 1980 a fabric wholesaler was created which was attributed to the success of the retail store. The Wholesale operation which today is the core of Akstex Africa distributes fabric products to +/- 1500 retailers across South Africa and the rest of Africa. Our core product focus is traditional fabric and basic fabric. As interest for the traditional fabric grew management decided to house all the traditional fabric under the brand "The Makoti Collection". Today "The Makoti Collection" brand had become synonymous with traditional fabric and has become a household brand. We at Akstex Africa are very conscious of brand popularity amongst consumers and many initiatives are being taken to entrench the brand further in our markets and this will only bode well for our customers. Some of the initiatives that have already been rolled out are; website, facebook page and a twitter handle. Over and above these mediums that we are using to build the brand you will also see more of "The Makoti Collection" brand being advertised in local newspapers in time to come and on fashion show runways. Another initiative which is creating much hype at Akstex Africa is the initiative taken to collaborate with local fashion designers to use our traditional fabric in creating their clothing so look out for fashion shows where "The Maktoti Collection" fabric is on show. This initiative with designer is not only about supplying the designers with fabric but seeing how we can create a sustainable business venture with our local designers which can help the designers in promoting and taking their work forward.
