Al Tamasuk - meaning 'Cohesion' in Arabic - is a not-for-profit, youth driven, social enterprise that is dedicated to raising awareness of the consequences of suffering from Diabetes, with specific focus on the difficulties coping in life after losing the ability of sight.Diabetes in Bahrain and the rest of the Gulf have reached worrying levels among adolescents and young adults. Recent reports by the Bahrain Diabetes Association reveal that around 27 % of the population have type-two diabetes, with up to a third of them not even realizing it. In Bahrain, which has a population of more than a million, this means up to 90,000 people could have the condition but are not even aware of it - or have impaired glucose, which is the stage before diabetes. The situation is compounded by the fact that it is not only genetic predisposition that is the culprit, but also the people themselves who are unwilling or unable to modify their lifestyles.Side effects of Diabetes include visual impairment and causes various complications such as diabetic retinopathy, vein blockage, optic nerve inflammation, cataract and glaucoma. These are complications that can lead to blindness.Considering the issue of blindness in depth, blind people in Bahrain are not given an opportunity to meaningfully engage with wider society. This has led to a lack of awareness of sighted people of the realities of blindness in Bahrain. Blind or severely visually impaired people also suffer from lack of equality when it comes to the availability of jobs that actually suit their situation and provide them with enough income to support a family.
