Education Management - Alameda, California, United States
The Initiative Mentoring Program provides local high school students with a community service opportunity that allows them to design lessons for young students from a wide range of backgrounds. Since 2015, the Initiative Mentoring Program has served over 300 struggling students at 5 elementary schools in Alameda. Mentors foster social skills, review academic concepts, and enforce positive behavior by developing engaging lessons aimed to equip our students with knowledge and skills for success. Our mission is to assist when teachers cannot, knowing that it is up to us to ensure that all students receive the attention they deserve. We are designed to meet the unique demands of each of the schools we serve, and currently utilize multiple models to adapt to the differences. The centerpiece of the ASTI Initiative Program is our unique PEER Model. The PEER Tutoring model was designed by ASTI Initiative founder Ken Der and launched at Paden School in fall 2017 as a pilot program intended to adapt to the needs of the wide variety of students we serve. The model is aimed at providing more comprehensive instruction by incorporating larger projects and skill-building activities into weekly tutoring sessions. While homework assistance remains an integral part of the session, a social skill—drawn from the Lifeskills Program—is set as the theme for each week.
