Performing Arts - Anchorage, Alaska, United States
For 35 years, Alaska Junior Theater (AJT) is the only private, non-profit organization presenting the highest quality, professional theater from around the world to Alaska's youth and family audience, regardless of their socioeconomic status. \\Each year, more than 45,000 students attend a variety of live performances, which share the common educational goal of "bringing learning to life." For many students, Alaska Junior Theater's school-time presentations are their only exposure to the performing arts and AJT provides over 2,000 full scholarships to low-income students who would not have access to the arts in other ways. \\Alaska Junior Theater is committed to keeping ticket prices low, allowing children of all financial levels to attend the professional theater experience we provide. Our low educational ticket price of $8.00 in Anchorage includes not only a performance, but also bus transportation for students and teachers to the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. This price covers half our costs of presenting the shows. \\Working in partnership with the Anchorage and Mat-Su School Districts, AJT presents shows that have a strong educational theme. Our shows inspire many students who cannot be reached in a more traditional classroom setting. Teachers also rely on our study guides to prepare their students for what they will see and to create classroom projects in history, social studies and other fields. \\One of Alaska Junior Theater's core values includes building a stronger community by presenting programs that offer different cultural perspectives to Alaska's children— expanding their horizons, offering insight into other cultures, and inspiring them to overcome barriers. Since its inception, AJT has also offered a public family series, allowing all members of the family to enjoy high-quality entertainment together. AJT was a recipient of the 2009 Mayors Arts Award and the 2001 Governor's Arts Awards.
