All Abilities Aquatics offers adaptive aquatic education for facilities that wish to start, build, or expand their offerings for individuals with disabilities. The Adaptive Swim Instructor is an online, 2-hour live training. This training provides information that swim instructors need to feel comfortable working with individuals with disabilities. The training provides information about medical diagnoses, safety considerations, teaching strategies, communication strategies, behavioral considerations, sensory-related experiences in the aquatic environment, and equipment recommendations. A manual is currently in the works. The Adaptive Aquatic Curriculum breaks down the complex, multi-component motor skill of swimming into easier to learn pieces for swimmers with disabilities. A virtual, live training will be available shortly for this program to assist with instructors to learn how the curriculum flows through swimming progression. Level 0: Gaining Trust, Exploring the Pool the swim instructor is given a guide for how to facilitate the transition from refusing to get near the pool to being able to move in the water with assistance and without distress.Level I: Water Exploration the swimmer learns the entry level skills, breath control and body control.Level II: Water Acclimation the swimmer gains confidence and some independence by being able to swim independently for short distances.Level III: Water Movement, the swimmer learns to swim longer distances and the roll-to-breathe method is taught to advance breath control.Level IV: Water Independence the swimmer continues to work on breath control and body movement, advancing to being able to independently swim an entire length of the pool without assistance.Level V: Skill Refinement is an optional level and is meant for swimmers who want to learn competitive level skills.
