~ Advancing energy efficiency. Decarbonizing the built environment. ~In December 2020, the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy released the long-awaited Regulations for the Mandatory Display & Submission of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for large commercial buildings. Qualifying buildings have until December 2022 to obtain their EPCs!This milestone is a significant driver for energy efficiency and long-term reduction in carbon emissions in South Africa. South Africa has an internationally committed target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. EPCs is a statement (valid for five years) of the energy performance of a building over the range of "Very Energy Efficient" to "Not Energy Efficient" when assessed against a reference point, and in accordance with SANS 1544:2014. The statement also encourages the owner/tenants to implement recommendations to conserve energy for a better EPC in the future.
