AAAD was formed on the invitation and efforts of Dr. N. Raghavan in 1978. It has been 33 years since the association started functioning in the Planetarium premises. In these 33 years the association has been at the helm of amateur astronomy in India. Amateur astronomers all over India look up to our association. Our association has many records to its credit. The association along with the Planetarium has conducted many a telescope making workshops over the years. These workshops were for amateur astronomers as well as short concentrated ones for school students, lasting a week or 10 days. The activities in the association were constant and running through several years. The members of the association were always called upon to assist in Planetarium programmes like the School quiz and other such. In 1997 the Association along with the Planetarium conducted an all India Amateur Astronomers Meet, which is still considered the best meet ever in India.AAAD and the Planetarium always collaborate to conduct public sky watches for example eclipses, conjunctions and occultations. This collaboration is quite active. On any particular public sky watch, the members of the association would always be more enthusiastic to show the sky to the public.
