From a family owned business to our future as one of the world’s premiere entertainment companies AMC Theatres and Cinemas welcomes approximately 200 million guests annually through the doors of its more than 300 locations. It all started when the son of one of the original owners returned from serving in the American army and took over a successful family business in Kansas. USA. Stanley Durwood saw one screen in one building as limiting. People wanted more choices. So he began remodelling several large single-screen cinemas into smaller buildings with multiple auditoriums. The result? The first multiplex theatre in the world was born. The success was massive, and the theatre served as a blueprint for the industry. By 1968, Durwood’s multi-screen theatre chain had expanded across North America and was incorporated as American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC). In 1984 AMC exported the multiplex concept to the United Kingdom, opening the first purpose built multiscreen screen cinema in Milton Keynes. After six successful years in the United Kingdom the AMC Cinemas circuit was sold to Paramount and Universal Pictures. This circuit would later be incorporated into the current Odeon Circuit. The current AMC Cinemas in Manchester opened in 2001 as part of a worldwide expansion which included cinemas spread over four continents. Today AMC Cinemas is part of Beijing-based Wanda Group, a leading privately-held entertainment conglomerate. And AMC continues to embrace the vital principles of innovation and service that began back with the Durwood brothers in 1920. When guests choose AMC Cinemas, it’s our goal to make every experience amazing.
