The aims of the American Red Cross are to improve the quality of human life and to enhance individual self-reliance and concern for others. If works towards these aims through national chapter services governed and directed by volunteers. American Red Cross services help people avoid emergencies, prepare for emergencies and cope with them when they occur. The American Red Cross is based on the efforts of Clara Barton. During the Civil War, driving her own buckboard, she carried food, blankets and medical supplies to both northern and southern fronts. After the Civil War, Barton traveled to Europe and learned of the recent works of Swiss businessman Henry Dunant who was a driving force behind the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Returning to the U.S. she founded the American Red Cross in Dansville, New York in 1818. The needs for relief from floods and forest fires during the next few years were also met by Barton and her new group of volunteers. In 1900, a congressional charter was granted to the American Re Cross, placing on the organization the responsibility for providing services to the U.S. Armed Forces and relief to disaster victims.New Volunteer Sign-Up: https://volunteerconnection.redcross.org/?nd=intakeHero Care: http://www.redcross.org/emergencycommunication
